I haven’t always wanted to be a teacher. In fact, I felt that the education system was flawed in the United States so why participate in it let alone become a teacher. This thinking changed after a movie I watched called “SLC Punk.” In the film, the main character refuses to continue his education in law for the same reason as me. He desired to see the system of law altered or in his case destroyed. His change occurred when he came to the realization that “you can do a lot more damage to the system from the inside.” I believe that the current school system must change and the way we educate students must change or our nation will suffer and more importantly, our children will suffer.
Professionally I have three key desires for education. The first one is to teach high school history. History is a topic I love and long to share my enthusiasm with my future students. Second, is would be to coach football. After coaching at the middle school level I realized how much I loved doing it and pouring my knowledge in the minds of student-athletes. Last, would be to teach at a Christian school. My faith has always been a big part of my life beginning with my early education in Christian schools.
My own personal goals are a little more directed to the well being of the students and are mainly defined in intangibles. I would like to make sure that my poor high school experience is not repeated in any of my students. Part of this would be to create a safe zone for students to come to me and freely talk about what bothers them. Last, would be having each student actively seek to further education and encourage them to do so.
