Google Earth was a terrific platform to deliver a lesson on Gettysburg. The ability to use GE to view the battlefield helps display where the two opposing armies are positioned and how terrain plays into the fighting. It helped show the high ground that the Union needed to hold in order to have victory. The 1994 film Gettysburg also helped provide a visual representation of the conflict, especially the fighting at Little Round Top. Lastly, I had the privilege of being to Gettysburg twice and possessed pictures from the battlefield. These pictures showed students how the terrain looked for soldiers who had been there. I learned that when teaching military history, maps play a big role in showing how things transpired, and reinforcing ideas of military tactics.
